WIGSTON CHESS CLUB

A Chess club in the City of Leicester

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: So where does the chess club meet?
A: We play at the Wigston Liberal Club, corner of Bull Head Street and Kelmarsh Avenue, Wigston, Leicester, LE18 1PA. Here is a map, courtesy of Multimap.

Q: And when does it meet?
A: Every Thursday night; from about 7:00pm onwards; if you are there for a social game or two then you can come and go as you please; matches start at 7:30pm on the dot.

Q: How much does it cost?
A: The subscriptions for the year starting 1st June 2007 are £36 (£18 if you are unwaged). The cost for a individual club night are negotiable with the Club Secretary, but I know that he usually allows a few visits before a decision on the annual subscription is made.

Q: Do you have to be any good at chess?
A: No, the club is open to all levels of player; however at the moment we do not have any junior or lady members; this is a shame because without a flow of new people to the club there is a danger that the club will decline. With social chess, there is an amount of talking and discussion taking place, however when there is a match (which is often) there needs to be silence which is not conducive to learning and improving your game.

Q: What's this about matches?
A: Wigston Chess club is part of the Leicestershire and Rutland Chess Association which runs the chess leagues for clubs in the region. We have six teams at the moment, ranging from Division 1 to Division 4. We do not have any team in the bottom two Divisions, 5 and 6. This is also an indication of the type of person we currently have in the club. Teams have either four or five people in them (depending on the Division) and one game of chess with clocks is played in the evening; the team result decides the outcome of the match.
